For the past two years I have been in a Communication Studies program at the University of Iowa- it’s a top-in-the-nation program. In fact, I can’t name one professor at Iowa who hasn’t wrote a book that fundamentally impacted the field of communications. Often I get the question- “Communication Studies what’s that?” Well, in a nutshell it’s the study of how humans create, interpret, and interact with each other through the shared use of symbols. I find it fascinating. I also can’t imagine a better time to study communication than right now- with the advent of social technology both outside of the workplace and inside the workplace. Being a Communications Studies student one would think that my adoption of Chatter in my org is off the charts. Fact is- it’s not and it frustrates me to no end. “Why can’t I communicate the benefits of collaborating to my coworkers?” This question haunts me. I
