Today’s post is going to start off with a reader’s email. I love getting email from my readers about post suggestions and recently this one came in from Launa Sanders- who gave me permission to repost it. Mike- I am a weekly subscriber to your post and would like to request a topic: Integration. I personally am a true #buttonclickadmin with zero developer knowledge and yet have been tasked with coordinating efforts to intergate several of our back-end systems. While I am working with each business unit who is the “expert” of the system, we as an org have absolutely zero experience integrating systems with Salesforce.com. I am hoping to get insight into your experience with integration. While I know every integration is different, my assumption is that up-front there are some questions that I need to ask in order to get off on the right foot (and hopefully come

I spent some time going back through older posts looking to see if I could find gaps in what I have been writing about. As soon as I took one look at the tag cloud I realized it was training. Perhaps it’s a metaphor for how Admins think, or maybe it’s because training could be the least sexy topic to talk about. I mean, I would much rather talk about Chatter, Cross-object workflow rules, or a host of other topics. But let’s face it, without proper training of our users all we will really be doing is chasing fires and being frustrated. So let’s talk training, but let’s look at it from a user standpoint and see how we can spice it up a bit so it’s less Ben Stein-ish and more School of Rock-ish! Below are my 5 tips to put a little zing into your training class when

I’m kicking off this post with quite possibly the best summer song ever made. You can disagree, but you need to post a link in comments to a better summer song. In the mean time, enjoy the laid back tones of Mungo Jerry before continuing on with this post. Ah, that song set’s me right every time. Alright let’s talk some Summer ’12 Salesforce release info. First, off it’s preliminary at this point. The notes that Matt Lamb has shared on twitter still have the Spring’12 logo them. (This is the version I found.) So to be fair, this won’t be an exhaustive post- I’ll give them a chance to release the “official” notes. But being a blogger, I can’t help but salivate over new stuff. So let’s see what we could be in store for- Safe Harbor of course. 1. Chatter Messanger goes GA (p.21) Finally, we have the

Depending on how busy my weekend is I like to catch up on sports and watch a few games. But this last weekend I noticed a trend in the sporting events I watched- they dwelled on the wrong. I watched part of a race on tv and there was no less than 15 instant replays of a single wreck. The announcers dissected it from every angle to the exact moment that something went wrong. “There, it was right there that it went wrong.” Said one of the announcers. Boy, he must be proud of himself. He identified the moment that someone screwed up. So I changed the channel, but all the rest of the games where the same- we dissect the moment for the wrong. I’m concerned we are focusing on the moment we go wrong. I want to you to look back at a business process you implemented, maybe

One can argue which was the best new feature in Winter ’11, but I think there is a strong case to be made for Permission sets especially if you are a ButtonClick Admin. Thankfully the days of managing dozens or hundreds of profiles are gone and you can grant permission to someone to accomplish a task simply and easily with a permission set. In my continuing “Voice Behind the App” series I chat with Justin Edelstein of Arkus about permission sets and their new AppExchange App- Permissioner. Wow, I have to say that this app will knock your socks off. And just as a side note, this interview is longer than the 4 minute goal I was shooting for, but with great content like Permission Sets I think it’s ok. Mike: Hi Everyone!
This week I am happy to have Matt Lacey a Force.com blogger join me on ButtonClick Admin for a look at how we as admins can take a page from the Developers and learn to collaborate more. Matt is from Melbourne Australia and has the privilege of being ButtonClick Admin’s first international guest blogger. He is a Salesforce.com Certified Administrator, Certified Advanced Administrator, and Certified Developer. Currently he is leading the charge on the StackExchange to get a Salesforce Q&A site set up. You can read more about Matt on his blog by clicking here. — Developers and ButtonClick Admins tend to be pretty distinct, sure there’s some crossover here and there, and some of us have learned to try and do some of the clicky parts before reaching for Apex (or codey parts after the clicky parts), but on the whole the two jobs are different. Of course variety

I’m going to shorten them (including today’s) to less than 4 minutes. You like the transcripts- so I’m keeping them. Really, it’s a win-win for all of us. That being said let me introduce Bob Nagy of iTools. I met Bob about three weeks ago when a suit walked in my office and said “Why can’t Salesforce email me when a task is completed?” Good question. Thankfully ButtonClick Admins have Bob who makes great tools on the AppExchange who make us look good. I would love to tell you more about it but I’m actually going to let Bob talk more about

I just finished presenting the “12 Most Successful Habits of a Salesforce.com Admin” to a great room of people at the Dreamforce to you conference. (You can view the presentation below.) I am constantly amazed at the energy and collaboration that are embedded at any Salesforce event. If you stand back and take the event into perspective– 200+ attendees, for 6+ hours on a Saturday all learning about Salesforce- I think it really speaks to the character and values that people who are cloud-driven bring to the table. It also reminds me how important it is to get outside of your cubicle as an admin, developer, or user and attend events like this. As a cloud evangelist I can’t thank the organizers of Dreamforce to you enough and I encourage you to reach out to them during the event or on twitter and pass along your gratitude! 12 most habits-

DirecTV remote. 3 versus a million (44- I actually counted). In my mind this is the epitome of “Thinking Different”. Now much as I have wanted to work another Steve Jobs picture into a post, I think this has real value for Button-Click Admins. They Think Differently They- is your users- and they do think differently. They see things differently than you do. I think back to a post by Kevin O’hara on Field Hoarding which is in line with a request I received lately to add “15 checkboxes to an Account page”. Yeah, I’ll just let you chew on that one for a second. But it reminds me that users see the interface differently than Admins. As Admins we should try

As a Button-Click Admin we can accomplish a lot- honestly. Probably more than we think. But sometimes we have to call in a Consultant to do the heavy lifting. In May of last year Tim McDonald did a wonderful post on “Working with a Consultant” , it really spelled out some of the fundamental points that an Admin needs to consider before working with an outsider. After a recent conversation with Jared Miller I realized there needed to be a part 2 to Tim’s post and what I would like to do is dive a little bit deeper into the next steps of working with a consultant and how to get both yourself, the organization, and your instance prepped to have the best possible experience while offering the Consultant perspective. I’ve always wanted to do a collaboration post in an interview-style post, so below is the result of my first collaboration
